There is a specific kind of anxiety that comes with releasing a debut novel. For years, Grady Gallagher and Sinjin Ravenshire have lived exclusively in my imagination. I’ve spent countless hours navigating the rolling hills of Virginia’s Hunt Country with them, agonized over the dialogue, and carefully placed every clue behind the pristine white fences of Fauquier County.

But as the countdown hits the five-day mark, the excitement is being chased by a healthy dose of first-time-author nerves.

Writing a mystery is a solitary act of construction, but publishing one is an act of vulnerability. It feels a bit like standing at the start of a grueling cross-country course.
